Overview

Tampa is the region's major urban center, built around a working port, the Hillsborough River, and a downtown that has grown considerably along the Water Street and Channelside waterfront in recent years. It is a larger, denser city than Bradenton or Sarasota, with the neighborhoods, job base, and cultural institutions that come with being one of Florida's principal metros.

The city covers a wide range of housing, from historic bungalows in Hyde Park and Seminole Heights to waterfront homes along Bayshore Boulevard and on Davis Islands, to downtown and Channelside high-rise condominiums and the suburban subdivisions of New Tampa and Carrollwood. Ybor City, MacDill Air Force Base, and the University of Tampa each shape the character of the neighborhoods around them.
